Link Between Creative Genius And Mental Illness Established
by Kate Melville

For decades, scientists have known that eminently creative individuals have a much higher rate of manic depression, or bipolar disorder, than does the general population. But few controlled studies have been done to build the link between mental illness and creativity. Now, Stanford researchers Connie Strong and Terence Ketter, MD, have taken the first steps toward exploring the relationship.

Using personality and temperament tests, they found healthy artists to be more similar in personality to individuals with manic depression than to healthy people in the general population. "My hunch is that emotional range, having an emotional broadband, is the bipolar patient's advantage," said Strong. "It isn't the only thing going on, but something gives people with manic depression an edge, and I think it's emotional range."

Strong is a research manager in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science's bipolar disorders clinic and a doctoral candidate at the Pacific Graduate School. She is presenting preliminary results during a poster presentation today (May 21) at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association Meeting in Philadelphia.

The current study is groundbreaking for psychiatric research in that it used separate control groups made up of both healthy, creative people and people from the general population.

Researchers administered standard personality, temperament and creativity tests to 47 people in the healthy control group, 48 patients with successfully treated bipolar disorder and 25 patients successfully treated for depression.

I agree with this hunch

I wonder if emotional range and emotional intelligence are correlated ... I kinda prefer the term emotional range though; it hits the nail on the head.

Thanks for sharing that.

I saw the parallel of emotional range and emotional intelligence too when I read the article.

emotional intelligence (as I see it) has more to do with perception-- perceiving others' emotions and being aware of how others are feeling, being able to interpret these feelings as one were experiencing the emotion himself/herself.

emotional range is being able to feel pain with the intensity like the depth of the ocean where normal people can only feel pain to the bottom of a swimming pool. Say your mom dies and you feel pain to 15ft, the bottom of your pool. The emotional range of some people, they can collectively feel the pain of the world and feel pain that is a mile deep. A deep pain which you or I could never understand because our capacity is only, say, 15 feet. It's the kind of pain that makes you want to blow your head off with a shotgun.

And emotional range in the other direction-- it's likely what causes the sensation and pleasure seekers to jump out of airplanes and have sex in public. The normal everyday thrills like Disneyland just won't do for some people. Their capacity for pain and pleasure extends in both directions. Now emotional range could explain how some people are mezmerized by music while others are indifferent to it. Some people can get lost in music. Some people just hear it as noise and aren't emotionally affected at all.

So I view emotional range as being deep in one's own emotions, either or both directions. And emotional intelligence is an awareness externally of others. Both abilities can be had together or mutually exclusive.

"My hunch is that emotional range, having an emotional broadband, is the bipolar patient's advantage," said Strong. "It isn't the only thing going on, but something gives people with manic depression an edge, and I think it's emotional range."

whatever condition it is that I have-- I would agree with describing my own condition in this manner. I have, since exhibiting these "bipolar" systems very dramatically in the past year, really refused to consider whatever I have as a disorder. It is my inability to blend into normal society which causes the general "disruption" which would further fuel itself into a conflagration of meltdown-- which would then show the effects of a purported "disorder." However, at the time, I had my own company and I was doing quite well. I could go surfing and ride my motorcycle and smoke as much weed and lay around and be as creative as I wanted. I was happy as shit. That was, until my friends/employees stole my company and mutinied on me.

However, the experience shows me that it's not a disorder, this "bipolar." It's because society requires followers and "Yes" men. If you stop following rules, paying your bills on time, doing everything on your to-do list, the world finds a way to collapse on top of you. I know because I'm sifting my way through the rubble at the moment. However, most, I'd say 99.9%+ of people will never get as far down the rabbit hole.

My "disorder" has given me the creative genius to create my aforementioned company. It's given me the balls and craziness to hatch my next scheme, Weedpons.com ==> an attempt to somewhat copy the Groupon.com business model and apply it to the niche Cannabis industry. U know, Weed+Coupons=Weedpons.com -- don't lie, it's a catchy name.

I was actually fucking high when I registered the domain name "weedpons.com" a few months ago in May. I even posted about it on IndigoSociety.com(click HERE for link LOL) see I'm not bullshitting. I was hoping someone from that site would be like "cool idea let's partner up!!!" Nope. I had to wait until one of my "high energy" days to give enough of a shit to start doing something about it. I'm so high on myself that I actually believe I could create something so genius in one day that's worth more than a normal person's yearly productivity. But yea, I feel like I've done it before in my previous business which I detest, real estate. So I'm getting as far from that industry as possible. I may need to re-enter to squeeze some income as that's where my contacts and knowledge lies, but I'd rather go wait tables at a restaurant, that's how much I F'in hate real estate, makes me wanna puke. I'm actually high right now as I type this. Otherwise I wouldn't fucking take my time to wrote out a coherent post. i'd just type some quick one liners or insult someone or post a naked picture of Megan Fox.

So I don't do things for money. I'm definitely not purely motivated by money anymore either. Most people who know me just thinking I'm pissing away potential money-making talent. Maybe I'm jaded because I tasted some early success. Maybe it was just luck. I'll spend the rest of my life trying to recreate that feeling though. Like my mind finally paid off. Doing it again would be a challenge.

You want to know what other "disorder" I display. That schizotypal personality type that's a shade below schizophrenia. See, all my personalities are well oiled well controlled messes. I get to be a different person and say different things and express a different "personality" at each of the web forums I visit. And I'm at quite a few now, including my own. And this comes naturally to me. I hear from some people, extraverts especially, that this computer forum shit just doesn't interest them at all, and the level of activity I log online might give a normal person brain damage.

I've had numerous people (seriously) think that I was a team of three (3) people logging time over at IndigoSociety.com because I was on an extended "high-energy" I guess they would call it "manic" stage of my "bipolar" and just on that site 24/7 where it didn't look like I ever slept. It's because I sleep in 1-2 hour spurts here and there if I need to. Recently I have been sleeping better. But rarely do I log more than a 4 hour session. And this is natural for me. I think I'm more normal than all You People. I think the body naturally sleeps 2-3 times per day. I'm just doing what I want to these days. Of course, I think my life may need to normalize a bit, as I'm looking to try and hold down a normal job, just in the mean time.

anyways, this post serves as my blog for the day. apparently i feel that this belongs better here than my own site. Basketball

please watch this video to expand your perspectives on "ADHD" another "disorder" which I don't believe I don't have.

this is not a new thing lol it is known for long time that ppl who are skilled are not all normal socially, all great scientist are known to have a sort of odd social behavior, it is known phenomena, and know profile for long time

it is clear nowday it doesn't seem so, it seem the only person that is valueable for society is the person in suit empty of anything, the good sheep who obey orders, and that it is the only model possible for humanity, but this bs, and many ppl, even in high place, ppl in the UN or MIT or even standford, but i don't trust standford a lot , it is linked with CIA and very high operative of governement so i'm very weary about study they make, cause standford is realy little brainwash box to form high responsible for society, so always need to be carefull with them, they are actually mixed up with every conspiration that you can imagine from google to cia to afganistan lol

and it is clear they are trying to make it like their model of good citizen is perfect and society can run and evolve only made of ppl like that, but it is complete crap, everyone know it now, even in highest circle of society, and many are currently doing their job in silence to try to infiltrate or getting a presence in those cricle, to bring up a bit 'alternative' way of life and getting budget, but it is not all the time easy, and those thing are never mediatised, they deal with too much topic that ppl who go crazy if they would know about them lol

eventually there is a part of ppl who just want to keep their priviliege they have by just wearing a suit and acting jerkass in an office, and who will want to matain this system at all cost, and they are the most active in maintaining this system, it is mostly those ppl that are mediatised in main stream media, but they are actually not all that all powerfull even if their own circle, and this kind of idea is clearly loossing its interest and brightness to yougn generation more and more, this system is clearly died by all side even if nobody really want to admit it and some ppl just want to maintain the status they have among this system taht they wouldn't have at all otherwise because they are just empty , dumb and non charismatic at all =)

this way of life is not sustainable on every layer of society, social, economical, ecological, it just doesn't work anymore, and everyone knows it even if they want to make as it in media

me too i tasted early success, and many ppl willsay i'm wasting my time or wasting monney making potential, or whole lot of judgement because i'm not on the path of the cookie cutter with his 2.5 kids and his 40h jobs lol this kind of life is so nto for me lol i would really feel like i really wasted my life i was doing a stupid useless job that lead nowhere else than to benefit a bunch of cocaine addict asshole who make monney on wars and all those stuff, to have the standard nucleic familly and all that jazz, i'm so much out of this kind of dream for my life lol it is so funny, it is clear i could probably easily have this, but i don't even give a fuck, i work minimum to get the minimum i need in my life, and then i study and do my projects and connect with ppl the rest of the time lol

it is clear i was working at 2000+ euro jobs and technical director were taking me in their office to help them design their stuff for biggest cosmetic firm i was 19 and came alone in paris with my computer living in a 12m² flat with a friend i have met for video game creation team, his boss wanted to recruit me at all cost lol then i moved away and created my own company with the craziest and coolest ppl of the world lol

we refused many tme big contract because their condition was crap and they are really a bunch of sou less vulture exploiter of amfia of shit seriously lol it is hard to find really good ppl in those circle, they are all hearthless frustrated to have wasted the most interesting years of their life in boring school, and to have a boring life, so they value a lot their normality and emptyness as a suprior thing because of the sacrifice they made to get their diplmoa and position, they are so stupid lol

with computuering i'm luccky sort of cause it is clear it is rather easy to find job in that domain that pay relativly well and not too too hard, so i'm not worried too mucb about myself too much, but it is clear situation is becoming totally crazy and upside down lol

the recent fail with bp spill and nuclear plant in japan it is very typical of this, ppl who get in power with corruption and method of teaching taht are totally dimb and are just tehre for monney and power to have their status of super normy citizen cookie cutter 2.5 kids, and they are totally incompatent at performing the technologic and social mircale that their rank was beiong respected for, it is totally reversed lol

i know also lot of top level geeks, who work for best companies all over the world, but they are often not politised a lot, not spiritual a lot, they are into technical side, a bit hackers are a bit more spiritual and policised, maybe it is what is happening with anonymous hacking crew, but otherwise they are very over paid and maintained in their bubble, and they won't really move to change anything, or to evenreally realis,e but i'm suprised to see more and more spiritual reference into very serious coding or engineering site, i know there are some ppl into geek who are also bit spiritual, but they don't really want to move anything, cause they are over paid and made golden offers, theydon't have any interest to move out of this, even smart indigo type persons, they are not in the pipe at all and already extra busy and spend their energy designing stuff for companies, they are generally not very receptive to policial or spiritual things, exept rare exeption in demomaking/cracking/hacking where you get ppl who are on the contrary very politised and activists, but it is clearly a different world from the ingenneer world, even if most of them are ingeener or work with ingeeneer, or even come from very good schools, they are not same than ingeeneer, but i'm not sure how much influence they can have in companies nowdays lol$

when i left demoscene there was actually some serous move from germany or northern country to organise conference about undeground computering in companies like adobe or microsoft, they had some listening hears lol not sure how they are doing now, i have them in my facebook but i disconnected from this world and it was getting too much watched over by agencies and police with past around cracking or hacking , demomaking it always been legal, but lot of ex cracker or ppl who also have a foot in cracking or hacking or into odd crew into these too lol
